Hello friends, I’m sharing my new secret to cleaning brass with one product. And here’s the kicker – you probably already have the item in your kitchen! Since the summer, I’ve been picking up super inexpensive brass containers on Facebook Marketplace and at garage sales. No surprise, they all needed a good polish.
Here are the three smaller items I bought. Pretty rough shape, eh?
Since I really don’t like to buy products tested on animals, I did some research for cruelty-free ways to clean brass. I tried a few, and you know which one surpassed the others? KETCHUP! I went to the grocery store and bought the biggest cheapest bottle of they sold. I came home and slathered it all over the brass pieces I bought, making sure to cover every spot.
I let the ketchup sit on the items for at least an hour. I rinsed each piece off under the kitchen faucet and dried them, making sure no ketchup was left in grooves, seams, etc.
I’m pretty excited about the results. I’m inspired to go find more brass containers. I like using pretty boxes, vases, etc to put ordinary things in. The oval one I use to hold all of my hair ties and bobby pins. The round one above is on my coffee table holding all sorts of random things like pens, hand lotion, lighter for candles and so on.
If you try this out, let me know how it turns out!
Happy DIY’ing,
Hello
I too did the. Ketchup diy. I leftcit on my brass elephants (about 10) for about 4 or 5 days. Now they are pinkish😞 I’m hoping the color comes back. I luv brass!!!!
I tried it and it didn’t work at all. Very disappointed. I guess I used the wrong brand of ketchup.
